“The Rimpa School Crosses the Ocean” is the fifth episode of the 1989 NHK series, “Japan: Spirit and Form” and it devotes even more of its running time to images of art than any of its predecessors. The emphasis is on the Rimpa School, which flourished in Japan in the 18th and 19th centuries and had a great influence on the Art Nouveau movement in Paris at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th.
